Visitors to Hamburg’s historic harbour area usually spot a handful of unique landmarks. Most are on land – the warehouses of the Speicherstadt and St Michael’s Church – while one rests elegantly in the gently lapping port waters.
This is the striking Cap San Diego, a historic fast general cargo vessel built in 1961 and a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike. NAVTOR is delighted to announce that we are now on board with this charity-operated icon of the German maritime scene.
Digital voyage
NAVTOR, through our wonderful team at NAVTOR Germany, has agreed on a sponsorship deal that will help the vintage vessel sail into the age of smart shipping.
The agreement covers the free supply of NAVTOR hardware and software, with the provision of NavBox and NavStick in addition to NavTracker and NavStation, including key layers and modules such as Passage Planning. UKHO navigational products (ENC, eNP & ADP required for VSL operation), and paper charts, will also be supplied free of charge.
Easy does it
Speaking of the decision to partner with NAVTOR, ship’s Navigator Gerd Sietas comments: “As the vessel only sails for around 20 days a year – being moored as a local museum and event location for the remainder of the time – and is only fully crewed when operational, we wanted to streamline processes and drive efficiencies where possible. NAVTOR, with the support of the local team, makes this easy.”
Unique experience
All installation tasks are set to be completed by arguably the biggest date in Hamburg’s maritime calendar - the annual Hamburg anniversary (PORT ANNIVERSARY – Hamburg's Maritime Riverside Festival) taking place from 9 – 11 May. This special programme of activities attracts an amazing 1.5 million visitors to the harbour area.
We’re delighted to add that, as part of the sponsorship deal, NAVTOR will hold its annual ‘NAVTOR User Seminar’ on the Cap San Diego in November, giving customers and other stakeholders the chance to enjoy this unique piece of German maritime history.
We look forward to seeing you on board!
