Why should only local markets get to know our wonderful regional MDs? We believe the people leading our national offices deserve international attention, both recognising their hard work and sharing the unique insights they’ve gained throughout their smart shipping careers.
With SMM looming large on the industry calendar, we think it’s time you got to know Matteo Gravili, NAVTOR Germany’s MD, a little better.

Matteo is a prominent figure in the German shipping scene and, apparently, could just as easily have made a name for himself as a house DJ, as well as a regular at what is arguably the world’s leading maritime exhibition.
Read on, discover more and don’t forget to say hello to Matteo at SMM – visit NAVTOR in Hall B7, Stand 316 this September.
Describe your personality in five words, or less?
Focused, passionate, bold, professional, reliable.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
From both an office and company perspective, I have to say it’s the remarkable team spirit that runs throughout NAVTOR. We are united behind our goal of making life easier for shipping companies through smarter shipping solutions, while also supporting and enabling one another. What we do is important and how we do it is fun – that’s a great combination.
Name one or two big issues, or hot topics, facing customers in your region?
Our regional customers face challenges that are global in nature, namely the fast (and accelerating) pace of the transition to digitalisation and the adoption of innovation.
How can NAVTOR help them address these?
It’s not just a matter of innovating for the sake of innovation; there must be real-world benefits to new technology. At NAVTOR every part of our constantly improving portfolio is focused on addressing pain points and creating competitive advantages for customers. We make sure that vessels stay efficient and compliant, with minimum impact on the crew on board and staff in the office, while delivering powerful business benefits. Owners and managers put their trust in our commitment to a smarter, greener and safer industry. That trust is a privilege, and we make sure we deliver on promises, and potential.
What keeps you awake at night?
My son used to… but his sleep is finally getting better!
Tell us one thing about you readers (probably) don’t know?
I think I’ve managed to keep this a secret from most people… In the past I used to be a DJ and house music producer.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?
Whenever you encounter an issue, always focus on moving towards a solution. The solution is all that matters, even if it means going against your interests or your natural instincts. Grow with the solution as it evolves. Be bold and, when you make them, admit your mistakes.
We’re going to visit your office… can you recommend a) a local restaurant b) a tourist attraction c) an activity?
a) Ristorante Il Cantuccio – excellent quality Italian food
b) Motorrad Gottesdienst – a huge event for anyone interested in motorcycles
c) Climbing on board the Rickmer Rickmers – an iconic museum ship that’s always worth a visit!
