What do you see as the most noteworthy development in the industry over the course of the last year? 


We are pleased to see a faster adoption rate and a wider acceptance of Digital Logbooks. By proving itself to be a critical piece for enabling digital transformation on board, the industry’s innovators and early adopters have already started to monetise the benefits from this transition.  


The “Early Majority” that waited to ascertain the success of such an innovation, is now increasingly buying in. 


Today, we currently see an adoption rate of around 15% for live digital log-keeping solutions, as forward-thinking owners and operators embrace Digital Logbooks in lieu of paper.

Driving maritime performance growth: Jacob Clausen answers the industry’s most pressing questions

What do you see as the most noteworthy development in the industry over the course of the last year? 

In a word, decarbonisation. Or rather, the step change in requirements to help enable it. 


1 January 2025 marked a line in the sand, with FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) entering into force, effectively accelerating the uptake of lower-carbon fuels by introducing GHG-intensity targets for energy used on board, supported by flexibility mechanisms (e.g., pooling/borrowing) and financial penalties for non-compliance. This comes on top of the already implemented EU ETS, which places a direct carbon price on emissions through the purchase of EU Allowances, increasing the cost of operating carbon-intensive tonnage. Seen together, these are game-changing regulations.

What’s next for eNavigation: Timo Essers shares five insights that will define 2026

What was the most noteworthy development in the industry over the course of the past year? 

Identifying a single defining development is difficult, as many of the innovations emerging across the maritime domain today serve important and interconnected purposes. However, from the perspective of eNavigation, several developments stand out as particularly impactful. 


Over the past year, we have seen meaningful progress on the S100 framework, which is finally beginning to take clear shape. Internally, our development teams, together with experts across our OEM and data departments, have been working intensively to ensure that NAVTOR’s existing and upcoming solutions are aligned with these future standards. This collective effort reflects not only the scale of the industry transition but also the commitment required to deliver truly futureproof navigation solutions.
