A Captain’s view: Optimising every voyage with flexible chart access

Captain Marcel Deeke, Designated Person Ashore (DPA), and Company Security Officer (CSO), Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG

Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG manages and operates a portfolio of advanced research vessels for the German government. Our missions are challenging, diverse, and worldwide, with a continual requirement for optimal efficiency, safety, and results.    As such, we need a navigation partner we can rely upon – one with a true global reach, a broad range of solutions, and the utmost commitment to close cooperation and high service standards. NAVTOR is our trusted choice.   NAVTOR delivers a range of solutions across the fleet, with NavStation now firmly established as our preferred platform for smarter, safer, and simpler e-Navigation. NavStation enables both individual and fleet-wide benefits. It is easy to use – putting everything a navigator needs at their fingertips – with functions such as auto-routing and passage planning taking the pain out of route planning and execution. The automation of tasks saves time and reduces the potential for human error, while the delivery of UKHO products such as AVCS, ADP,  and e-NP is seamless.   Opting to access ENCs on a PAYS  basis is a real advantage, especially given the geographical scope of our operations. It means we only pay for the charts we use, with immediate availability and free usage for planning purposes. We’re also exploring the benefits of NAVTOR’s weather routing, which incorporates the latest weather data into voyage planning to enhance safety, reduce fuel consumption, cut emissions, and more.   As important as the innovations – if not more so – are the NAVTOR people. We feel we have an open line of communication at all times, helping us not only get the standards we demand, but also allowing us to feed back our experiences into the development and delivery loop for continual improvements. In that way, this goes beyond a supplier-customer relationship. It’s a partnership.

Keeping the traffic flowing: A Marine Superintendent’s view of NavStation

Captain Marius Florian Duta, Marine Superintendent, Peter Döhle Schiffahrts-KG.

Marine Superintendents are often thought of as a bridge between ships and shore, and there can be a lot of traffic on those bridges! To keep things running smoothly, we need strong systems, robust routines and, increasingly, technology that can help simplify an ever-more complex regulatory, operational and business environment. NAVTOR solutions are tailor-made for that task.  With more than 50 vessels to take care of, it provides huge peace of mind to know that crews have the very latest, fully compliant publications (AENP and ADP) at their fingertips on NavStation, which brings everything onto a single, easy to use platform. The feedback I hear from the teams on the Passage Planning module is always positive. With over 10 years’ experience as a Master Mariner, I know how demanding and time consuming the task can be, so the benefits of an automated, standardised system are a game-changer in terms of efficiency, predictability and control.  Having the entire portfolio of vessels on the same integrated ecosystem enables more informed insights, knowledge sharing and, at the end of the day, smarter decision making. For a busy Marine Superintendent, that’s a huge plus. It helps me keep the traffic flowing nicely!

From Paper to Digital: Hafnia’s Journey to Full Digital Compliance at Sea

Surajit Chanda, VP - Technical, Hafnia

Managing compliance across a global fleet has always required significant coordination between ship and shore teams. For many years, paper publications and manual processes were part of daily operations, but as our business evolved, it became clear that digitalisation offered a more efficient and future-ready approach. Moving from paper-based compliance to a fully digital solution has transformed the way our vessels access and manage critical information. Having up-to-date publications available through a single platform gives our crews confidence that they are always working with the latest information, while reducing the administrative burden associated with manual updates and document management. One of the greatest benefits has been consistency across the fleet. By ensuring every vessel has access to the same information at the same time, we can support a more standardised approach to compliance and operational best practice. This not only improves efficiency onboard but also strengthens collaboration between vessel teams and our shore-based personnel. From a management perspective, digital compliance delivers greater visibility and control. It simplifies processes, reduces the risk of errors associated with paper handling, and enables faster access to the information needed to support safe and effective operations. For Hafnia, the transition from paper to digital is more than adopting new technology. It is about creating smarter ways of working, supporting our seafarers, and ensuring compliance remains seamless in an increasingly complex operating environment. The result is a more efficient, connected and resilient fleet, ready to meet the demands of modern shipping.
